Disc Herniations
A disc herniation occurs when the soft inner material of a spinal disc pushes through a tear in its outer layer. When this material contacts a nearby nerve, it can cause sharp pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that travels into an arm or leg.
Research supports a conservative approach for many patients. One study of patients with acute back pain and sciatica from disc protrusion (Santilli et al., 2006, The Spine Journal) found that spinal manipulation was associated with meaningful improvement in pain for many participants. Not every case is suited to manipulation, so we use careful screening and may choose lower-force methods based on your findings.
